That same movie led me to a book by Arthur Donahue and his time as a “Yankee in a Spitfire.” I still have the book. It’s on a shelf next to another book about “The Few” and a lifelong interest in those that couldn’t just stay home and wait.

Great piece Alex - I happened to be in London on business back in 2009 on the day the statue of the Battle of Britain's "unsung hero" Sir Keith Park was unveiled in central London. I guess you know Air Chief Marshal Sir Keith Park commanded RAF squadrons that defended London and the South East from Luftwaffe attacks in 1940. As the crowd assembled many were men of great age, some in wheel chairs, some with sticks and all accompanied by young RAF service personnel. Those aged men were once the young sprightly lads like Eugene who were prepared to sacrifice all in defence of Britain and freedom. Couldn't help a tear coming to the eye at such a sight. We have much to owe all the nationalities who came to the defence of this little Isle those decades ago.

Lest we forget.
